If you live on a property in a rural area, you often don’t know when a vehicle has entered or exited your property and this is an uncomfortable feeling.

If you already have a security camera on the driveway to your property, you can setup your security system to send motion alert emails to MotionAlerts.ai and then use MotionAlerts.ai to analyze the motion alert images to notify you when a known or unknown vehicle has entered your property.

Here are the key steps…

  1. Register a free MotionAlerts.ai account here
  2. Setup your security system to email motion alerts from a camera at the entrance to your driveway to MotionAlerts.ai the email address listed here
  3. Setup MotionAlerts.ai with a list of known vehicle Labels here
  4. Confirm MotionAlerts.ai is receiving the motion alerts from your security system here

Next, you simply wait for perhaps a week to receive lots of different motion alert images from your security system and then you can label each of your motion alert images here. Here are a few labeling tips…

  • If there is nothing interesting in a motion alert image, label that motion alert image with Ignore
  • If there is a known vehicle in a motion alert image, label that motion alert image with the specific vehicle label (like Mike’s Truck)
  • If there is an unknown vehicle in a motion alert image, label that motion alert image with just the generic Vehicle label
  • Don’t use specific labels if it’s really not possible for you to tell what was in the motion alert image; in other words, if it’s completely dark and all you can see is headlights, use just the generic Vehicle label instead of a label like Mike’s Truck
  • You can select multiple motion alert images that you want to have the same label and label them all at the same time

After you have accumulated and labeled enough motion alert images to have about 10 motion alert images for each label, you can select Train Now from the training button here. Note that on a free account that you can only train every 10 days so be sure to wait until you have lots of motion alert images labeled before training.

MotionAlerts.ai will then use the latest artificial intelligence technology to build a model capable of predicting labels for each motion alert image. Training can take a really long time (up to 90 minutes).

With a trained model, MotionAlerts.ai will now start predicting labels for each motion alert image. A few notes about predicted labels…

  • Your actual labels have a dark gray background and the predicted labels have a blue background
  • Initially some of the predicted labels may not be that accurate but MotionAlerts.ai will get smarter and smarter if you label more and more motion alert images and retrain a new model
  • It is even useful to provide MotionAlerts.ai actual labels on motion alert images that MotionAlerts.ai correctly predicted (you can do this easily by using the thumbs up button after selecting one or more motion alert images)
  • MotionAlerts.ai can use anything in an image to make a prediction and sometimes this creates unexpected results. If MotionAlerts.ai has been correctly labeling motion alerts images with Mike’s Truck all summer and then fails to predict Mike’s Truck properly after the first snow, this might be because MotionAlerts.ai thought the green grass in the background was important to recognizing Mike’s Truck. These type of problems can easily be resolved by adding more actual labels (like labeling motion alert images for Mike’s Truck with snow in the background).

Now that you have MotionAlerts.ai trained and working well, you can setup notifications to send you an email or text when any vehicle enters your property or when an unknown vehicle enters your property (see the Help page to setup your Contacts and Alert Rules).
